Animal shelter hit by email cash scam

Staff at the Rainbow Rehoming Centre have warned people not to react to an email from them asking for money after hackers took over their email.

Hundreds of people on their mailing list received the email asking the recipient for up to £1,400 to help a stranded member, but Helen Davis, chairwoman of the animal rescue shelter warned it is a scam.

The email, which on the surface looks to be legitimately sent from the Rainbow Rehoming address and is signed from one of the organisation's volunteers, appeared in hundreds of inboxes yesterday, including that of the North West Telegraph.

It reads: “I made a quick trip to Valencia in Spain for a Volunteer Training Program (VTP), my bag with cash, mobile phone and credit cards in it were stolen from me at the Hotel Park where I lodged.

“I've made contact with my bank but they need more time to come up with a new one. I need you to lend me some money to sort myself out of this predicament. Right now I need about £1,450 to settle my hotel bills and other expenses.”
