The theft of jewellery with sentimental value from a house in east Belfast was "a despicable act carried out by heartless thieves" a DUP councillor has said.

Adam Newton said the thieves stole a variety of jewellery, including gold chains, pendants and pearl earrings, plus a sum of money.

It happened in Edgecumbe View, a long established residential and family area, in the Holywood Road area.

"This worrying incident took place on Sunday July 10 around lunchtime," Belfast city councillor Mr Newton explained, appealing for help.

"For any householder, this is dreadful, and the effect of such a dramatic incident can last for a long time."

"I want to support the PSNI as they call on members of the public for assistance from anyone with even the smallest piece of information.

"The criminals who carried the robbery must be caught and put behind bars to help keep the entire community safe."
