Escaping into a police station may not be the most common tale, but that is exactly what has happened to a beautiful yellow pet bird in Newtownabbey.

However this little birdie is telling no tales, and local PSNI officers are baffled at how it got into the station.

It was found flying around the gentleman's toilets earlier this week and the PSNI has issued an appeal for information on its local Facebook page.

An officer said they believe the bird may be a canary or a finch, describing it as "beautiful" with "very distinctive colouring".

It had been living in the station's evidence box on an officer's desk, and was no doubt getting spoiled by its admirers with plenty of treats, but had now moved in with a bird loving constable who is supplying it with "nest and breakfast".

Has anyone lost it? If so, could you please get in touch with police in Newtownabbey on the non-emergency number 101.
