Detectives have appealed for information after an arson attack on a flat in east Belfast.

The blaze at the apartment on the Albertbridge Road was started sometime between 2pm and 2.45pm on Monday.

There was no one in the property at the time, but police said other flats in the block were occupied and it was lucky no one was hurt.

One neighbour fled the building after a smoke alarm went off.

A large amount of damage was caused to the flat and to adjacent apartments.

Six fire crews eventually extinguished the blaze.

Detective Inspector Snoddy said: "I would ask anyone who might have seen anyone acting suspicious in the area of the flat on the Albertbridge Road around 2pm yesterday or who knows anything about this incident to contact detectives at Musgrave police station on the non-emergency number 101.

"Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving details, they can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
