Assault death sparks murder probe
The death of a man who died after being assaulted at a taxi rank near the centre of Belfast is being treated as murder, police have said.
Father-of-two Joe O'Neill, 60, a barman and Glasgow Celtic football supporter, suffered multiple head injuries.
He died in hospital early on Monday - 24 hours after he was attacked at a taxi rank in the King Street/Castle Street area.
Mr O'Neill originally came from Scotland and had been living in the west Belfast area for 20 years.
Neighbours said they were shocked. One said: "It is a massive tragedy for the family. He was well known, especially among Celtic fans, and was well liked."
Police confirmed Mr O'Neill had been involved in an altercation at the taxi rank.
A 34-year-old man was charged - before Mr O'Neill's death - with causing grievous bodily harm and bailed to appear in court in Belfast on November 18.
