Aware launches charity partnership with global law firm Baker & McKenzie
Northern Ireland depression charity Aware has teamed up with one of the world’s largest law firms to launch a two year fundraising partnership.
Baker & McKenzie, which officially opened its new offices in Belfast’s City Quays last month, will be encouraging its employees to take part in a host of fundraising activities over the next two years to help Aware carry out its work supporting local sufferers of depression and mental illness.
Belfast-based employees at the global law firm chose Aware after considering dozens of local charities and partly due to the charity’s education programme, as well as its 22 outreach support groups – all of which work hard to break down the stigma associated with mental health.
Speaking about the launch, Teresa Sloan of Aware said, “We are delighted that Baker & McKenzie has made Aware its first charity here in the province. We have always been lucky to have support from some of Northern Ireland’s leading businesses and this partnership is no different.
“The next two years are very important for Aware as we will be celebrating our 20th anniversary and are hoping our fundraising will move up a gear to highlight this milestone. In the meantime, we are looking forward to putting in place our fundraising plan with Baker & McKenzie and carrying out exciting joint projects with the team.”
Jason Marty, Executive Director for Global Services Belfast said, “Baker & McKenzie invests for the long term and a critical part of that commitment is an engagement with the local community from the grass roots.
“Here in Belfast the team is very proud of our corporate and social responsibility project work and thanks to an employee-led selection process we have already teamed up with the local charity, 'Aware', to help support those affected by depression. We are also establishing pro bono and community service opportunities and we intend to be a market leader in Diversity and Inclusion initiatives.
"This continuing type of engagement with all our stakeholders, including potential recruits, local business leaders, universities, politicians and the media is vital for our continued success. We are one of the biggest law firms in the world but our strength is in our local people.Belfast is a great opportunity for Baker & McKenzie, and we hope Baker & McKenzie is also a great opportunity for Belfast. We really appreciate the welcome we've had from our charity partner and are excited to see where it leads us."
