An investigation has been launched after two people were injured by an escaped heifer at the Balmoral Show.

The young cow bolted in the grounds of the former Maze Prison on Wednesday afternoon. A female animal handler and a man visiting the show were both struck by the heifer.

Both were taken to hospital.

The heifer was sedated and taken away following the incident. Royal Ulster Agricultural Society chief executive Colin McDonald said a review will be carried out.

"We are always sorry to hear of an incident, particularly where people are injured," he said. "We trust that the injured parties will have a full and speedy recovery."

He added: "The animal was being exhibited by an experienced handler and the procedures were being correctly followed and monitored by the stewards.

"Our medical team were on hand and removed an injured person to hospital in one of the ambulances which is stationed at the event."
