BBC SPOTY Awards: Martin O'Neill's kind gesture for Celtic superfan Jay Beatty
Former Celtic manager Martin O'Neill and current Celtic superfan Jay Beatty shared a wonderful moment at the BBC SPOTY Awards in Belfast on Sunday night.
The Republic of Ireland boss bumped into Jay (11), who has Down's syndrome, and the pair instantly recognised each other.
As shared by his dad Martin Beatty on Facebook, the little man from Lurgan posed next to O'Neill and said: “Martin, up the Hoops. You were a Celtic legend.”
O'Neill's response was even better, saying: “Jay, you are a Celtic legend.”
Jay netted a penalty in a half time competition during Celtic's 2-0 win against Hamilton on January 17 after being invited to the game as a guest of the Lanarkshire club and went on to win the goal of the month award in Scotland.
Jay is most famously known for his relationship with former Celtic striker Giorgios Samaras.
Samaras carried Jay around Parkhead for Celtic's lap of honour after winning the SPL in May, 2014. The pair had met at a friendly game Celtic has played in Ireland.
Jay sent Samaras a video message during the World Cup in 2014 and the striker offered to pay to bring him out to Brazil but the kind offer clashed with a family holiday.
