BBC presenters Kerry and Ralph McLean were handed an early Christmas present yesterday - a baby girl.

The celebrity couple welcomed their third child three weeks before her Boxing Day due date.

Their second daughter made a surprise appearance, and the news was met with messages of congratulation on Twitter.

Jayne McCormack said: "Lovely to hear, a nice wee Christmas present, hope mum @kerry_mclean and baby girl are doing well!"

Another wellwisher wrote: "That was quick, you only went on maternity leave on Thursday".

It is believed the baby weighed in at a healthy 9lbs 13oz, but there were no details of a name last night.

In August, the 40-year-old broadcaster, already mum to Tara and Dan, described her excitement at the prospect of becoming a mum for the third time.

In keeping with modern tradition, she took to social media to announce her pregnancy by posting an adorable photograph of a tiny hand-made baby cardigan and her first scan images. She said: "So here's something I wasn't expecting in my 40th year!! Absolutely beyond delighted!

"I think this might just be the best Christmas present that Ralph and I have ever had."

Originally from Ballymoney, Kerry presents the 3-5pm slot on Radio Ulster.

Her husband Ralph is well known for his country music shows on the same station, and he also echoed his wife's expression of delight at the imminent new arrival.

He said: "Just wanted to share our big news! Can't wait! McLean number 3 on way!"

Last year, Kerry revealed she first spotted Ralph when she sneaked to Kellys when she was just 14. However, romance didn't blossom until years later when they began working together.

"He was standing against a wall and I spent the whole night walking past him, but he never noticed me," she said.

"I have since found out that he's really short-sighted, so he just didn't see me.
