Be prepared is NI Water’s watchword

NI Water is planning a campaign to prevent a repeat of the problems caused by the ‘Big Freeze’ which left thousands of homes without supplies last Christmas and New Year.

And bosses told an Assembly committee they would “do things differently” if the crisis — which led to the resignation of chief executive Laurence MacKenzie — were to recur.

During the disruption, 40,000 homes and businesses were without water and half-a-million litres had to be shipped in.

The campaign, expected to get under way in late September or early October, will ask customers to lag pipes, make themselves aware of the location of stopcocks and check whether they work.
