Could this be the best Christmas tree in Belfast? Residents and staff at a care home in Belfast certainly think so.

Last night, a Christmas tree draped with more than 27,000 lights was switched on at Towell House residential home on Kings Road. At least 1,000 people turned out last night to observe the big switch-on and participate in a torch-lit procession around the grounds of the home.

Three years ago, general manager Jill Brooker started what has now become an annual event. She said: It's a living tree and the grounds are fully lit up. We have a lot of residents here, there are 84 of them. It got to the point where most of them were unable to get into town so, three years ago, I decided to bring Christmas here."

Local schools took part in a competition and 24 nearby P1 to P3 pupils were chosen to turn the lights on.
