A further 105 spaces are also being made available at the council’s staff car park in Ormeau Avenue at weekends during the festive season.

The free parking offer will run until Sunday 3 January (inclusive) and cover Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

“Christmas is a key time for our retailers, restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions, and we want to do what we can to support our local businesses by increasing footfall into our city,” said Councillor Declan Boyle, Chair of the council’s Strategic Policy and Resources Committee.

“This initiative will hopefully encourage visitors will stay on for longer and enjoy more of what Belfast has to offer this Christmas, whether they’re shopping locally or travelling to the city from elsewhere.

“It’s also good news for shoppers too, cutting costs at what is already an expensive time of year and coming into action just in time for the traditional start of late night shopping at the end of November.”

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council

Meanwhile the Ulster Unionist party grouping are delighted that Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council have approved their proposal to offer free car parking at weekends in the run up to Christmas 2015 throughout the Borough .

UUP councillor Darryl Wilson said: "Our proposal to offer free car parking over three weekends in December was designed to benefit both shoppers and traders alike.

"Helping to ease the burden on local shoppers at Christmas time was our primary objective.

"We hope that our 'free parking' initiative sees increased footfall in town centres across the Borough throughout the festive period. Local traders depend on  increased sales at this time of qyear which in turn helps bring about benefits to our local economy. "
