Belfast Giants extinguish Coventry Blaze

Saturday night saw the new look Aer Lingus Belfast Giants take on the Coventry Blaze in their first home game of the season at the Odyssey Arena.

After their 3 point opening weekend, the Giants looked to defeat the Blaze at home to take them towards the top of the table.

The game got off to a fast start, with Coventry’s Russ Cowley racking up the first goal, with Aaron Nell and Ross Venus picking up assists on the goal, after just 2:10. The Giants managed to level the score before the end of the period, with Matt Hoffman picking up a goal off a rebound from Josh Prudden, with Jon Gleed also picking up an assist.

Tim Cook got the second off to a good start, rifling a shot past Jaeger in the Blaze goal, to give the Giants the lead. Brandon Benedict and Colin Shields picked up assists on the goal. Craig Peacock added another for the Giants before the end of the period, with assists from Dan Welch and Matt Hoffman.

The Blaze hit goal at the start of the third, with a powerplay goal from Greg Owen, from a deflection off a shot from Dan Carlson. However, the Giants managed to seal the score at the end of the period with an empty net goal from Mike Bayrack, assisted by Shields and Welch.

The Giants took a 4-2 win, with Hoffman picking up man of the match for the Giants, while Cowley took man of the match for the Blaze.

The Giants made it a 4 point weekend on Sunday night, defeating the Blaze in Coventry, coming out with a 3-2 win.

You can catch the Giants taking on the Edinburgh Capitals at the Odyssey Arena this Saturday night, facing off at 7pm.
