Belfast man Ciaran Nugent denies double killing in apartment
A 33-year-old Belfast man has denied murdering a man and woman who were beaten to death in a flat in the east of the city last December.
Ciaran Nugent, from Falls Road, denies murdering Caron Smyth and Finbar McGrillen on December 12 last year.
When the charge of murdering Ms Smyth was put to Nugent, he replied "not guilty". Nugent also entered a "not guilty" plea at Belfast Crown Court when he was charged with murdering Mr McGrillen on the same date.
The beaten bodies of Ms Smyth (40) and Mr McGrillen (42) were discovered in the living room of an apartment at Ravenhill Court on December 13, 2013.
Nugent is the second man to be charged with the double murder. Co-accused Shaun Patrick Joseph Hegarty (34), formerly of Grainne House in the New Lodge area of north Belfast, appeared in the same court earlier this month and also entered not guilty pleas to the two murders.
The case is due to be reviewed again at the end of January, and the trial - which is expected to last up to four weeks - has been earmarked to take place next May.
Nugent was remanded back in to custody by Mr Justice Weir.
