Belfast Pride 2017: LGBT festival brings explosion of colour to city centre

 

The Belfast Pride parade brought thousands of people out on the streets in the city centre.

For the first time, representatives of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and the Garda  marched in uniform at the event.  A rainbow Pride flag has been raised at a UK Government building at Stormont for the first time. The flag was raised beside Stormont House on Friday morning to mark the city's Pride festival.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said he believes it is only a matter of time before same-sex marriage is legalised in Northern Ireland. Sixty bands took part in the annual explosion of colour - with representatives of the PSNI and Garda marching in uniform for the first.

The Republic of Ireland's first openly gay prime minister attended a festival breakfast.
