Belfast rush hour traffic came to a near-standstill after the closure of the Westlink as police dealt with an incident.

The arterial route was closed in both directions between Divis Street and York Street due to the incident on Clifton Street bridge, police said.

Translink Metro tweeted to warn travellers of "severe disruption" due to the incident.

The public transport organisation displayed a traffic camera photo showing cars and lorries in long queues near the Roden Street off-slip of the Westlink.

A PSNI spokesman said: "The Westlink has now re-opened in both directions following an incident at Clifton Street bridge however delays are expected."
