Bogus callers roaming Co Antrim

Police in parts of Co Antrim have advised people to be wary of cold calls from individuals offering them assistance in reclaiming Government money allegedly owed to them

Officers in the PSNI’s D District, which takes in Antrim, Carrickfergus, Lisburn and Newtownabbey, said they have become aware of residents receiving calls from people claiming to represent Government departments or agencies, such as the Ministry of Justice or Office of Fair Trading, and advising that a large amount of money is owed to them.

The residents are being asked to provide bank details before being asked to visit specified shops and supermarkets to obtain vouchers that should then

be sent on to allow the money to be released.

The PSNI said these callers have no connection with Government agencies. A spokesman said: “No Government body would ever call asking for personal bank details, offer money back on bank charges, credit card charges or Payment Protection Insurance.”

Anyone who suspects they have been a victim of a similar fraud should contact police immediately on 0845 600 8000.
