Book charts Mercy sisters
A new book, The Call of the North, by Marie Duddy, celebrating the work of the Sisters of Mercy in Down and Connor, over the past 150 years was launched last week.
Amongst their most important achievements are the care of the destitute, especially vulnerable women and children, the provision of primary and secondary level education, the care and visitation of the elderly and sick those living at the margins of society, and of course the foundation and development of the Mater Infirmorum Hospital.
The Mercy Order’s service during key periods in 20th century history, such as the Belfast Blitz in the Second World War or with the victims of the recent Troubles, makes compelling reading.
Bishop Patrick Walsh was one of the special guests at the launch, at the Mater.
