Boxing coach jailed for punching ex-partner
A boxing coach who admitted repeatedly punching his former partner in a drunken, jealous rage after she dumped him has been jailed for two years.
Judge Stephen Fowler QC told 43-year-old Thomas Rocks he had shown Marcella Mervyn “no compassion”.
The judge also told Rocks that he had to have consideration for a deterrent element in the sentence.
He ordered Rocks to spend six months in custody and 18 months on licence.
Earlier, prosecuting lawyer David McAllister told Judge Fowler that when Ms Mervyn came home on August 13 2009, she found Rocks waiting for her. He shouted “I'm your boyfriend” as he punched her in the face.
The lawyer added that when she tried to get her mobile phone to call the police Rocks snatched her bag, breaking the shoulder strap as he hit her in the mouth.
After his arrest Rocks, from Maeve House on the New Lodge Road in north Belfast, pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm and causing criminal damage to the bag.
