A seven-year-old boy is critically ill in hospital after a crash involving two cars at the weekend.

The young boy was injured when a Ford Ka and a Vauxhall Mokka collided on the Lough Road in Islandmagee, Co Antrim, at 2.40pm on Saturday.

The female driver of the Ka is in a serious condition.

A nine-year-old boy was also taken to hospital.

A couple and two infants, aged two and three, who were travelling in the other car, were treated for injuries they suffered in the collision. They are not thought to be life-threatening.

Inspector David McCausland appealed for information from any witnesses.

"We believe several vehicles were in the area at the time and the occupants may have either witnessed the collision or came upon the scene but turned and left without leaving any details," he said.

"We would appeal to these potential witnesses to get in touch with us."
