A six-year-old transplant recipient has made a remarkable recovery just months after receiving his grandmother’s kidney.

In April Julie Murray (42) went beyond the call of duty to become the first grandmother in Northern Ireland to be a live kidney donor.

When grandson Raymond was born he had just one functioning kidney which deteriorated until last year he required dialysis.

Both he and Julie — from Highfield in west Belfast — have recovered well and the transplant has been deemed a success.

Brave Julie underwent the transplant operation in April after tests showed her kidney was a good match.

Julie said: “He was always in and out of hospital.

“I have a really close bond with Raymond because his mum Natasha was just 17 when she had him, so I helped out a lot.”

The dual operation was carried out across Belfast with Julie’s kidney removed at Belfast City Hospital and the surgeon himself transferring it to the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children, where Raymond was waiting in theatre.

Natasha described the drama on the day of the transplant.

“It was nerve-wracking and I worried when Raymond’s surgery ran on, but he came through it.”

His grandmother said she would encourage anyone to consider being a live kidney donor.

“I have been told I can live a normal, full life after donating my kidney,” she said.
