Brain tumour sufferer returns to finish race started a year ago

Published 10/05/2012

A Fermanagh man who collapsed because of brain tumour during a 10k race is expected to return to finish the race he started almost a year ago.

Gary Kernaghan will be back at the starting line of his local Ballinamallard race on May 28 just 10 months after doctors found a four centimetre long tumour in his brain, which turned out to be benign.

Gary is thankful his seizure happened during a race surrounded by people who could assist him rather than at the wheel of his former job as a HGV driver which could have had disastrous consequences.

“Going out for that run probably saved me,” the father of three told the Impartial Reporter, adding that whenever he steps out for a run these days he makes sure his family know the route he intends to take.
