Bóthar launches Mournes Challenge Trek

Bothar NI, which sends local livestock to developing countries to help poverty-stricken families become self-sufficient, has launched its Mournes Challenge Trek, set to take place this summer from 14th – 16th August 2011.

The all-island charity, which sends local livestock to developing countries to help poverty-stricken families become self-sufficient, is encouraging the people of Northern Ireland to don their walking shoes for the annual trek. This year, funds raised from the challenge will support Bóthar’s project in Southern Honduras – a country devastated by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

The three day trek will involve exciting hikes over Slieve Donard, Slieve Binnian and along the Mourne Wall – all of which are a must for anyone wanting to discover the beautiful County Down coastline. The trek also caters for all types of walkers from novice rambers to professional hikers.

Aoibheann Fearon, Northern Ireland Representative for Bóthar NI, said: “It’s been over thirteen years now since Hurricane Mitch hit Central America, with the total damage amounting to over $5 billion, most of which was in Honduras. The country is still recovering from this unprecedented catastrophe and Bóthar NI is working closely with its partners at Heifer International to help change the lives of over 2000 families with gifts of goats, cows, bulls, hens and bee hives.

“The Mournes Challenge Trek is an excellent opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to come together, have some fun and help us raise a target of over £30,000 in order to make a difference to the lives of people living in Southern Honduras.

“Walkers have the option to come along for the full three days where accommodation is provided in a picturesque cottage complex on the outskirts of Rostrevor Village or opt for a one day trek.”

All Bóthar projects practise a ‘pass-it-on’ system whereby families give their animal’s first born female offspring to a neighbouring family - it is a gift that keeps on giving.
