Burglar is jailed for attack on student during break-in
A father-of-three who broke into a house in the university area of Belfast and attacked a student who challenged him has been jailed.
Ciaran McMurray (29), from Rugby Avenue in Belfast, and Kieron Matthew Sean Brown (19), from Woodvale Street, also in the city, targeted the house at University Street last September. The pair had just met at a hostel and barely knew each other before carrying out the break-in.
Belfast Crown Court heard that when a student living in the property challenged the intruders at 4am, Brown left the house but McMurray punched him in the face and bit his earlobe.
Judge David McFarland placed Brown on two years' probation and ordered him to serve 100 hours' community service.
The judge handed McMurray a two-and-a-half year sentence, half of which will be spent in custody with the remaining 15 months spent on supervised licence upon his release.
