A court has heard that a man dressed as the cartoon character Buzz Lightyear gave police the finger and shouted abuse at them.
Peter Carr (25), of Ivy Terrace in Londonderry, admitted being disorderly and assaulting police.
The court was told that at 10.15am on November 1 last year police in the Shipquay Street area saw two men dressed in costumes having an animated discussion.
As the police passed, Carr made the finger gesture towards them.
Police spoke to him and he shouted abuse. He was warned about his behaviour, continued to be abusive and was arrested. Defence solicitor Kevin Casey said that his client had had far too much alcohol on Halloween night, but that there were no sectarian overtones in the abuse.
District Judge Barney McElholm sentenced Carr to two months in prison suspended for 18 months and ordered him to do 180 hours community service.
