A shortage of cemetery space in Londonderry will inevitability lead to the opening of a crematorium in the area to serve the populations of counties Londonderry and Donegal.
Derry City councillor Sean Carr, who has worked as an undertaker for 32 years, said he first raised the issue of a crematorium because he could see the increasing lack of space for burials for himself and due to the growing number of queries he had from people who did not want to be buried after death.
Mr Carr said : “A feasibility study showed there will soon be a real shortage of space at the City Cemetery and at church-owned graveyards so there needs to be alternatives in place.
“Land has already been identified so it will just be a matter of seeing if it would pass planning regulations.
“Belfast has shown that there is the need for a second crematorium and I myself spoke to the auditors and suggested a second crematorium should be sited somewhere in the north west.”
