Call for prison overhaul
SDLP Justice Committee member Conall McDevitt MLA has said the systemic failures by the courts and prison service which enabled two prisoners to be released, further emphasises the need for a complete overhaul of prisons in Northern Ireland.
The South Belfast MLA said: “Today’s report underlines the need for a fundamental review of prisons in the North.
“The Criminal Justice Inspection Report and internal inquiries conducted by the Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS) highlight a number of important procedural and communication gaps within our criminal justice system.
“It is essential that our prison and courts service move immediately to address the systemic failures, particularly at Maghaberry Prison, that have been identified in the report.
“It is also very important that lessons learned in this report are applied across all our prisons.
“What must never be forgotten is that a dangerous prisoner remains at large and poses a significant threat society due to these systemic failures.
“This must never be allowed to happen again.”
