Career of injured firefighter in balance

By Mary-Anne McNulty

The future of a Londonderry firefighter could be in the balance after an attack on the tender he was driving left him with serious damage to one eye.

The officer received hospital treatment after shards of glass from the shattered windscreen flew into his face.

The fire crew, from the Northland Road station, was attending a small blaze in the Ballymagroarty area on Thursday evening when a lone youth emerged from the bushes and hurled a missile at the vehicle.

Assistant area commander Colm McGuigan said: “The officer was treated for three hours in Altnagelvin. One of his eyes was seriously damaged and we can only hope and pray that the damage isn't permanent.”

The appliance involved was out of service for four hours.

Brian Stanfield, of the Fire Brigades Union, said: “We’re constantly making efforts to stamp out attacks of this nature.”
