Carl Frampton: Sports stars quick to tweet congratulations

Some of the biggest names in sport have lauded Carl Frampton's achievement in becoming the new IBF super bantamweight world boxing champion.

The Tigers Bay hero has joined a hallowed list of greats as he becomes Northern Ireland's newest number one in his sport.

Ireland and Ulster rugby player Tommy Bowe – who was at the fight – tweeted yesterday morning: "Unreal night at the @RealCFrampton fight last night. Great event, support and what a win."

Former England cricket captain Andrew Flintoff also sent his congratulations with his tweet: "And the new champion of the world .... Amazing @RealCFrampton so pleased for you!"

Frampton's friend, double Commonwealth gold medal-winning boxer Paddy Barnes, said to his followers yesterday: "Carl Frampton World Champion! What a fight! What a night! #boxing".

He cheekily added to Frampton's manager Barry McGuigan: "Still can't get over last night! @ClonesCyclone will you get me on the next bill?!?!?"

Rory McIlroy and Tony McCoy were also quick to congratulate a fellow world leader in sport.

The Holywood golfer tweeted just after the fight: "Massive congrats to @RealCFrampton on becoming world champion tonight!! Unbelievable performance from the wee man #Jackaltime".

Champion jump jockey McCoy from Moneyglass, hailed Frampton as "world class".

"Well done @RealCFrampton IBF world champion... class performance in beating a very tough kiko Martinez," he wrote.

Former boxing champions also joined in the celebrations, including the Argentinian former super welter and middleweight champion and 2010 Fighter of the Year, Sergio Martinez who tweeted a picture of himself with Frampton and Kiko Martinez. Barry McGuigan's son Shane, who trains Frampton in London, tweeted his delight: "@RealCFrampton Champion of the World! The best night of my life. #PROUD."
