A suspect object which prompted a security alert in Co Antrim has been declared a hoax.

Police dealt with a security alert in the Rockfergus Avenue area of Carrickfergus.

Rockfergus Avenue had been closed to traffic at junction of Oakfield Drive.

Police said a number of homes in the area evacuated.

Rockfergus Avenue has reopened to traffic and residents have been allowed to return to their homes.

Army bomb teams examined a suspicious object discovered in the area and have declared it to be an elaborate hoax.
