Carrier bags cost 'could double'

The cost of carrier bags could double to 10p by next April, Northern Ireland's Environment Minister said.

Alex Attwood also wants to extend the levy to low-cost reusable bags.

The aim is to stop low-cost reusable carriers from becoming throw-away bags and littering the environment.

The minister said the 5p levy on single-use containers had been welcomed.

"The welcome for the levy confirmed to me that people here wanted to help tackle the issue of waste and make local efforts to address climate threat," he said.

"I want to build on this momentum and people's clear ambitions. That is what the new (Carrier Bags) Bill aims to do."
