Londonderry's Christmas lights celebrations were minus a few stars when two characters based on a children's cartoon were unable to attend because of licensing issues.

Animated dogs Skye and Marshall, from Nickelodeon's PAW Patrol, were supposed to be present for the big switch-on in Derry's Guildhall Square on Thursday night, but were dropped from proceedings when it was discovered they were unauthorised to attend.

The event was organised by Derry City and Strabane District Council, which advertised the cartoon rescue dogs as a special appearance alongside Santa Claus. The two TV characters were included in much of the pre-event promotion.

American-based television network Nickelodeon said it had not "organised or authorised" the use of Skye and Marshall for the lights switch-on.
