Charge withdrawn for man accused of one-punch attack of Northern Ireland league footballer
A charge against a man accused with the one punch attack on Institute footballer Niall Grace has been withdrawn.
Matthew McDermott (22) from Cornshell Fields in Londonderry had been charged with committing grievous bodily harm with intent against footballer Niall Grace outside a bar at Waterloo Street in the centre of Derry on the night of September 11 of last year.
Following the incident the victim was taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast with initially life threatening injuries from which he has since recovered.
At Londonderry Magistrates' Court on Thursday a prosecution barrister told District Judge Barney McElholm the charge against the defendant McDermott was to be withdrawn and replaced with a formally administered caution.
Footballer Grace was left with serious injuries in the incident and spent over a week in an induced coma.
