Child porn pervert is arrested by chance

BY PAUL HIGGINS

A pervert who was "caught by happenstance" with almost 500 images of child abuse has been jailed for a year.

As well as the jail term handed to 54-year-old Gary Hope, he was also ordered to serve a further three years on supervised licence, to sign the sex offenders register for 10 years and was barred from working with children.

Prosecuting lawyer David McAughey told the court Hope, with an address at Brighton Avenue in Bangor, was caught "by happenstance" when police were investigating a burglary in Carrickfergus in October last year.

An Acer laptop had been stolen in that burglary and the lawyer said police were alerted to a suspicious car in another place in the seaside town, finding Hope asleep inside.

Coincidentally, Hope had an Acer laptop in the car, and when police asked to examine it he became defensive, which aroused suspicions and led to his arrest and subsequent charging.

Hope, the court heard, had two relevant previous jail convictions for similar offences, including one for child abduction in 2004.
