Children playing on wasteland in South Armagh had a lucky escape after discovering a air gun and ammunition dumped in the area.

The gun and other items had been stolen during a burglary in Lurgan on December 9.

Politicians and the police said the situation could have turned out much worse, given the highly dangerous circumstances.

Sergeant Sam Hoey said: "The fact that a child found it does not bear thinking about and we are grateful that no one was hurt."

"If you have any information which may assist our investigation please phone us on 101."

Newry and Armagh MLA Danny Kennedy added: ""Those who had illegal possession of this weapon chose to discard it without thinking of children or anyone else who may have found it.

Newry and Armagh MLA Dominic Bradley described the find as "very disturbing news".
