An air rifle and ammunition have been found dumped on waste ground in South Armagh by children playing in the area.

The discovery was made at the back of Jonesborough market on Monday afternoon.

It is believed the weapon and gun cabinet had been stolen during a burglary in Lurgan earlier this month.

Police Service of Northern Ireland Sergeant Sam Hoey described the thieves as reckless.

He said: "We are extremely fortunate that no one was hurt.

"I cannot describe the actions of a person who would leave a firearm where any member of the public could come across it. The fact that a child found it does not bear thinking about."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.
