Young children have escaped with their lives after shots were fired at a house in Co Fermanagh.

The attack happened at around 1.20am on Wednesday in Milltown Court, Newtownbutler.

It is understood that the family in the house belong to the Traveller community, and included children. A vehicle was also set on fire, however no-one was injured in the attack.

Shots were fired through the front windows and door.

Fermanagh & South Tyrone MP Tom Elliott condemned those responsible and appealed for anyone who has information to contact the PSNI.

Mr Elliott said: "It is chilling to think just how utterly stupid this act was.

"There were young children in the property at the time when the shots were fired and this could have so easily ended in tragedy.

"There must be consequences for those who engage in such serious criminality.

I would appeal to anyone who has information that might help the police catch those responsible to contact the PSNI on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
