Eleven men and women from a south Belfast church are heading to Peru next month as part of a Christian missionary project to help build a community centre for elderly people there.

The team, of all age groups, from St Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Rosetta, is leaving for Lima and Arequipa in the South American country on July 12 with international charity LatinLink for three weeks.

David Maxwell, the church’s minister, said: “This trip follows a previous one in July 2007, again with LatinLink, in which we were working in a nursery school, also in Arequipa.

“We’re going to be involved in trying to establish a community centre there. It’s a place for the elderly to meet.

“We’ll be doing whatever we can in terms of building the centre.”

The church is holding the last of their fundraising events for the trip, a concert with the Grosvenor Chorale soloist Amy Harper and guest performers, on Friday, June 19. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.45pm start. Tickets are £10.
