A man is fighting for his life after being stabbed in a late-night attack in a Co Tyrone village.

The 40-year-old victim was knifed in the stomach during a fight in the main street of Augher.

He was taken to hospital and his condition was described yesterday as critical.

Two men, aged 23 and 29, have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Ulster Unionist councillor Robert Mulligan said serious violence was unusual in the village.

"I am shocked to hear of this dastardly deed. Augher is a quiet village not accustomed to violence.

"This type of behaviour is clearly unwelcome."

Police said the stabbing took place in Castlehill Gardens shortly after 11pm on Thursday.

Detective Inspector David Hallaway said: "A 40-year-man sustained a stab wound to his stomach following an altercation in the street.

"His condition is described as being critical."
