Concerns over Derry sunken graves

An Assembly member says she is concerned by reports that a number of sunken graves at the City Cemetery in Londonderry were left unfilled for a period because of a shortage of soil.

AN Assembly member says she is concerned by reports that a number of sunken graves at the City Cemetery in Londonderry were left unfilled for a period because of a shortage of soil.

Sinn Fein councillor Martina Anderson said families were told that soil needed to fill in graves which had subsided would be “unavailable for a number of weeks”.

She said: “This is something I find quite concerning. The City Cemetery is well maintained.

“However, the council needs to ensure that work is continued.”

A spokeswoman for Derry City Council said that the topping up of graves is a regular operation for cemetery staff.
