Connswater Centre stays open
The under-fire Connswater Community Centre is to remain open — for now.
As anticipated in last week's Community Telegraph, a decision on the future of the east Belfast community facility was referred to the council's Development Committee, which met on Monday night.
It unanimously decided that the centre will continue to |operate, with staff from the council's Community Services section working with volunteers from the Connswater Community Group.
A report will be brought forward to the Development Committee's January meeting, giving details of all the hours that Community Services staff have given to the centre since the management of it came under the control of the Connswater Group.
The Legal Services section from the council will compile a report for the new year meeting as members are concerned that because money has been spent without authority, they could end up being surcharged.
The Community Telegraph understands that the council's audit panel discussed the matter last week in the presence of local government auditor John Buchanan and one of his staff.
Ulster Unionist councillor Jim Rodgers said: “Members want to get a further report on the assistance given to the centre and the legal implications.”
