Cost of theory test set to fall for learner drivers in Northern Ireland

First time motorists are getting a boost as the Environment Minister Mark H Durkan announces a £5 reduction in the cost of the driving theory test.

The cost of the driving theory test will be cut by nearly 25%, saving Northern Ireland's learner drivers over £400,000 annually.

Mr Durkan said:“I am pleased to announce that from this October the fee for car and motorcycle theory tests will fall by £5, taking the cost of a test from £30 to £25.

“I can also announce that I will reduce the fee by a further £2 in October 2015 to bring the cost down to just £23. Theory test fees for other categories of vehicle will also be reduced.

“By agreeing new contract arrangements for the delivery of theory tests I have secured significant cost savings. I believe it is both right and proper that I pass these savings on to our customers."

The SDLP MLA for Foyle added: “It is my intention to ensure that my Department’s services are delivered in such a way that they meet customers’ needs at the least cost possible.”

The table of fees is available here.
