Council ‘shrubs’ off bogus letter

Newtownabbey Council is warning local residents to ignore a ‘bogus letter’ about height restrictions on hedges and shrubs.

A number of residents in the Collinbridge and Collinward areas of Glengormley have contacted the Council after receiving the letters.

The bogus letters refer to new government legislation which does not come into effect until March 2011.

Speaking about the bogus letters, the Council’s Environmental Health Manager, Clifford Todd said: “Any correspondence received by members of the public now referring to requirements under this legislation should be ignored. The PSNI are aware of the scam and will be highlighting it to their officers through their neighbourhood briefings.”

Last year, Environment Minister Edwin Poots stressed that the laws, when introduced ‘will not limit the height of garden hedges in general, nor will people have to seek council permission to grow a boundary hedge.’
