Councillors to face protest in push for Israel boycott
People Before Profit (PBP) will picket Belfast City Hall today in protest at the council banning its motion calling for support for a campaign to boycott Israeli goods.
The protest is due to take place at 5pm, ahead of a council meeting this evening.
PBP councillor Matt Collins said: "Rather than allow people to democratically discuss and debate this question, the council has refused to accept the motion, deeming it illegal.
"This is a blatant act of censorship.
"The Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel has been most successful around the world.
"We should at the very least be allowed to discuss it in Belfast."
Councillor Collins said that Derry and Strabane City Council has passed a similar motion, as had several councils across Britain.
People Before Profit MLA Gerry Carroll voiced his support for debating the resolution. "The BDS campaign resonates with people across the city of Belfast," he said.
"The Irish Congress of Trade Unions, which represents hundreds of thousands of workers here, has a pro-BDS policy and I myself have moved a similar motion to be debated at the Assembly some time in the future.
"At the very least, this motion should be debated at Belfast City Council."
