Councils launch bonfire survey

Published 23/09/2010

A new strategy to look at the future of bonfires in the north west is to be developed by councils in Derry, Strabane and Omagh.

The three councils are now calling on local people to give their opinion on the ritual fires, traditionally burned over the summer months.

Belfast-based auditor FGS McClure Watters has now been commissioned by the North West Peace III Cluster to develop a strategy for bonfires. The aim will be to manage bonfires in each of the three council areas. As part of the project, surveys are being conducted that focus on the views of people in areas where bonfires are lit.

Sue Divin, Derry-based community relations officer, said: “We are interested in your views so that we can understand the issues associated with bonfires, to learn from your experience and to recommend improvements for the future.”
