A 50-year-old cyclist has been killed in a road crash in Co Down.

It happened on the Newtownards to Bangor road shortly before 5.50am on Thursday.

He is the third cyclist to die on Northern Ireland's roads so far this year.

The male driver of the Renault car was not injured in the accident.

The road remains closed as police continue their investigations.

Inspector David McClements has appealed for anyone who was travelling on the carriageway and may have seen the crash to contact the Police Service of Northern Ireland's collision investigation unit on 101.

Some 50 people have died on the roads during 2016 - a reduction on the previous two years.
