A Co Down woman has been nominated for ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ at this year’s Specsavers Everywoman in Retail Awards.

Gwen Patterson is proprietor of Centra Moat Filling Station in Donaghadee and was given the opportunity to transform the 4,200 square foot Centra store and Texaco petrol forecourt despite having no practical retail experience.

During her time in charge, weekly gross sales have increased 150 percent since opening and the store regularly achieves mystery shopping scores of more than 90 percent.

“My view is just go for it; if you’re driven everything will work out,” she said.

The awards will be announced at a glittering ceremony at The Marriott, Grosvenor Square, London, on September 30.

They are supported by the government’s national Make Your Mark in Retail Campaign and the Women in Retail Network.
