Departing Primate Cardinal Sean Brady appoints priests
Catholic Primate Cardinal Sean Brady has made several appointments in his diocese just days after confirming he wants to leave his post.
The Archbishop of Armagh announced that eight priests were moving within the diocese with a ninth priest retiring.
The announcement included the appointment of Reverend Biju Thomas, on loan from the Archdiocese of Kottayam, Kerala, India, to be curate in Armagh.
The Very Reverend James Shevlin is retiring from active ministry in Omeath, where he will continue to live.
Cardinal Brady has been heavily criticised for swearing two victims of paedophile priest Brendan Smyth to secrecy during an internal church inquiry in 1975. Their evidence was never handed over to police, allowing Smyth to continue abusing children before he was jailed in 1994.
Last week, Cardinal Brady confirmed that he had offered his resignation to Pope Francis ahead of his 75th birthday, the day on which bishops are required by canon law to tender their resignations.
