Derry Farm Hill security alert declared a 'hoax'

A security alert which caused a number of homes to be evacuated in Londonderry has been declared a "hoax".

It was sparked in the Farm Hill area following the discovery of a suspicious object.

Army bomb experts examined a suspicious object discovered in the area and declared it to be a hoax.

Farm Hill has now reopened to traffic and all residents have been allowed to return to their homes.

The SDLP's Mark H Durkan said the disruption caused "absolute havoc" for local residents.

Sinn Fein councillor Elisha McCallion condemned those responsible.

"This is the last thing the local community needs, particularly on such a cold day," she said.

"Those behind this security alert have nothing to offer the local community.

"We don't need or want these type of incidents in the city."
