Derry man dies after drowning in Amsterdam canal
A Londonderry man has tragically died after being found in an Amsterdam canal.
The 37-year-old's death has been described by Dutch police as a "tragic accident".
According to the Republic's Department of Foreign Affairs Damien McFadden was found on Saturday night at around 11pm.
Reports have said passers-by raised the alarm after spotting the man's body in the Singel Canal in the Dutch capital.
It's understood he was taken to hospital but died a short time later.
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness passed on his condolences to the dead man's family.
"I am absolutely devastated to hear the news," he said.
"He is a father of a young family and in fact he lives very close to my daughter. It is a very distressing story, heartbreaking.
"My thoughts obviously go out to the family at this very, very sad time.
The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it was helping the family.
"We are providing consular assistance both through our embassy in The Hague and through our consular team in Dublin," said a spokeswoman.
